Lone gunman Gavin Long killed three officers and wounded three others in a shooting that took place Sunday, July 17, 2016, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
On his 29th birthday, Long went on a shooting rampage that killed three Baton Rouge police officers. The three victims of this ambush style attack are Montrell Jackson, 32, Matthew Gerald, 41, and Sheriff Deputy Brad Garafola, 45. Two other officers suffered injuries, and another officer was critically wounded.
The shooting took place at the Hammond Aire Plaza where Alton Sterling was shot and murdered by Baton Rouge Police officers on July 5.
Prior to the attack, Long was active on social media and voiced his opinion about fighting back against police brutality with violence, rather than peaceful protest. Long was a former Marine, he served for five years and retired as a sergeant in August 2010, according to the U.S. military sources.
During a speech in Melbourne, Australia, Vice President Joe Biden called the killings a “despicable act, an attack on our very way of life at home.” Sunday, after the shooting in Baton Rouge, President Barack Obama urged unity among racial and political groups. President Obama offered his full support to local, state, and federal agencies in a statement released on July 17, 2016.
